North Jakarta Bolsters Water Management to Prevent Flooding

The North Jakarta City administration is teaming up with city water agencies to overhaul the region's drainage and water management systems to combat flooding.

North Jakarta Mayor Hendra Hidayat expressed full support for the infrastructure plan.

According to him, the program represents a concrete step by the government to reduce flood risks while bolstering coastal resilience against climate change and land subsidence.

"The Water Resources (SDA) projects are slated to begin in the near future, with a completion target of 2027. This program requires synergy and support from all stakeholders," he expressed, Wednesday (1/28).

He explained that if land acquisition is required during implementation, the North Jakarta will prioritize a persuasive approach through public outreach.

"This step is taken for the sake of regional protection and to ensure the safety of residents from the threat of flooding," he explained.

He aims for this project to build a unified front between government levels and residents to address persistent flooding and tidal floods.

"I am looking forward to seeing this plan executed on time to deliver real results for the community," he explained.

Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA) Head, Ika Agustin Ningrum outlined a three-pronged strategy for North Jakarta: upgrading infrastructure, boosting pump efficiency, and adding new pump stations in flood-prone zones.

"We are integrating these efforts by shoring up levees and drains while maximizing our pumping power to move water out of residential areas as quickly as possible," she explained.

He added, infrastructure work will involve shoring up about 1,640 feet of the Layar connector channel and strengthening nearly 1.5 miles of the Cakung Lama River embankment in Sukapura.

According to him, boosting pump power is a key part of the plan. The Bulak Cabe Pumpiny Station is slated for a major upgrade to a total flow rate of 847 cubic feet per second. This will be achieved by deploying three heavy-duty pumps, each capable of moving 282 cubic feet of water per second.

Jakarta is building new pumping stations to bolster its flood defenses. New facilities include:

Pegangsaan Dua: 318 cubic feet per second (cfs)

IKIP: 106 cfs

WR Jengkol: 71 cfs

In coastal zones, the city is installing high-capacity stations at Cilincing KBN (636 cfs) and Ancol (883 cfs) to ensure rapid water discharge during storm surges.

"Beyond managing inland runoff, we are also shoring up our coastal defenses. This includes building shoreline dikes and installing land subsidence monitors to protect North Jakarta’s waterfront,” he added.

North Jakarta City Council Coordinator Epriyanto expressed his appreciation and support for the water management infrastructure plan. As a resident of the Cilincing, he welcomed the upcoming realization of the Bulak Cabe Pumping Station.

"We expect this project to minimize flooding and improve the quality of life for our residents. It is a crucial part of our long-term, sustainable flood mitigation efforts," he hoped.
